After a long night at the Viennese flex…

I am not sure if the coffee really helps today to make my brain work properly again….. after a really good concert of Deus I used to hang around with some friends – no one of Carla’s Cafe has been there – but 2 friends of great Surfdog7.

Austrian beer, French Cigarettes and Belgium music – a very nice mixture last night at the flex Vienna that is a wonderful location along the ‘Wien-River’ that takes it’s way through the inner City of Vienna.

And Deus was great tonight – although I needed a little time to think about this concert – because for me seeing Deus for the 4th time in the last 10 years (1 – worst case scenario tour about 1995, 2 – the ideal crash tour about 1998, 3 – pocket revolution tour about 2006 and 4 the vantage point tour 2008) it has been different to concerts before – they have changed sound and members and the new songs were a little bit new in my ear – another things was that I had no real good place inside of the concert hall and the sound was – have to say – really terrible there – too much bass and sometimes problems to differ the single instruments… that is why I prefer concerts like this in the Arena Vienna although the flex is a cool location and not far from home…

The other thing is that the band – for my opinion – has changed sound and arrangements a little bit too much into the direction of ‘disco beat’ and ‘walls of sound’ – what on the other hand is a very interesting progression of Deus music. May be the reason of this is Barman’s interest in this musical area – said this I remember his work with Magnus. But the walls of sound where to long sometimes and the expected opening of a sound theme did not come.

The highlight of the concert for me has been the wonderful version of ‘instant street’ played as the 3rd song and including a great escalation of rhythm and speed – followed by ‘Theme from Turnpike’ (5th song this evening) and the interpretation of the songs of the last album ‘vantage point’ (‘the architect’ or ‘when she comes down’). The guitarist Mauro Pawlowski had genius moments through the gig that I really loved (his moving always reminds me on an old friend of mine who used to dance similar to Mauro). Tom Barman acted as the maestro of Deus – very charismatic and in a good mod yesterday night.

Always nice is to see the musicians around the location after the gig has taken place – where they are walking around & talking to the people as a part of it enjoying some wine or beer…..

At the moment the 3rd Deus album (‘in a bar under the sea’ at the moment) is rotating in the HiFi in my apartment this morning – and Carla likes to dance to it very much – so I am going to fetch another coffee and try to find something against my headache – and that much is clear: I am looking forward to seeing Deus again as soon as possible on the stage – what else?!

Keep smiling & have a nice day – Martin
